This portrait is of the philosopher and educationalist, Matthew Lipman, who developed a wonderful program of philosophy for children. I have tried to capture Mat’s humane intelligence and playfulness in a classroom setting. That the students are in their junior years is suggested by the somewhat cartoony treatment and the questions on the board relating to word and object.
