This painting takes its inspiration from Jeffrey Smart’s Portrait of Clive James, in which the subject appears as a distant figure on an overpass. In Portrait of a City Guy, the subject looks out from a balcony of an apartment above a car-parking station. In both cases, the claim to be a portrait is tenuous.
